About Kamellia

Her International Career

Her international career started in Canada and the United States, after she left Japan in 1971. She heard the voice of Oum Kaltsoum for the first time at an Arabic feast. This music has magnetilsed her from that first moment on. Later in the evening, a dancer performing with sensual gestures was her first glimpse and invitation to unveil the mystery of Oriental Dance. Her road to an international career began. She studied different styles in the United States, and became a professional dancer. Very soon her fame as an artist rose like a star in the firmament and she visited and was invited to various countries. She taught at the universities of Simon and Fraser and at British Columbia in Canada, and gave seminars on the West Coast of the United States. For three months she presented her own program about Oriental Dance on Canadian television, called "Shape up with Belly Dance".

To deepen her insights and nourish herself at the roots of Oriental Dance, she left for Egypt to continue her study. It's there that this art is still practised with the utmost purity. The "Queen" of Oriental Dance,Nagua Fouad, handed over her crown to her successor at the Holiday Inn at Cairo in 1979. Kamellia is admired by stars like the Egyptian dancers Tahiya Karyoka and Samir Gamal.
