Her Style
|
|
The style of Kamellia is a combination of strict dance techniques, bodily training, a
wide register of expressive emotions, a mastering of the body from head to foot, a
profound knowledge of Arabic music and innovative creativity. Her dance
technique is influenced by the Egyptian, North-African, Turkish, Lebanese and
American traditions. She has explored all these traditions in depth and practised its
techniques for many years. The variety of all these elements are encompassed in
her choreographic creations.
Kamellia intends to present in her Oriental Dance the full register of human emotions,
and not only the glitter of the "nightclub" style. It's her intention to express the whole
range of sentiments, emotions, subtlety, joy, anger, fear, etc. Also some aspects of
social relations are included. It's her ambition to develop Oriental Dance up to the
level of a universal language.
In her art, she also integrates elements from more "mystic" dance traditions such as
trance dance and whirling. Of course. there are also influences from the Far-East, not
only because of the special movements included, but especially in the general
feeling of subtlety and the general attitude of the dancer. "Dancing like the birds" is
an expression that she learnt from her mother. A balanced variation and subtle
structure of her choreographs are therefore very important. Oriental Dance is above
all a kind of art intended to intensify joy and happiness.
Kamellia has a unique attitude in terms of the emphasis she puts on the relationship
between music and dancing. Through intensive training, she has developed her
voice in such a way that she can sing Arabic songs with a personal timbre. She plays
various instruments herself (the drum, the Tabla, the Ud). Playing music herself, helps
the dancer to perform with more subtlety. She can transform every nuance. every
change in the music into subtle vibrations of her body. Dancing means for her "to
interweave body and soul with the music". The dancer has to unify herself
completely with the music. A bodily and affective bond. Sound and dance should
move, breath, yearn... at the same rhythm. The dancer has to surrender, to move in
a complete energetic synchronicity with the music. The Oriental Show is exactly that
invitation to every spectator to participate in such spiritual sensuality.A delicassy
for the soul.
